Real World Lecture: What Threats Should we be Alert to in Today’s Society?

As threats to national security continue to evolve, so too must the laws and policies designed to combat them. This session explores the changing threat landscape in the UK and examines how counterterrorism legislation has adapted over the past two decades in response to emerging risks and security challenges. Since the terrorist attacks in the United States on 11 September 2001 and in London on 7 July 2005, the UK Government has continually strengthened its security and counterterrorism framework. Often introduced in response to emerging threats, successful attacks, or intelligence led concerns, these measures have significantly reshaped the UK's approach to national security. Beginning with the landmark Terrorism Act 2000, which provided a broad legal definition of terrorism, successive governments have introduced a further ten Acts of Parliament designed to address the changing nature of the threat landscape. This session will examine these legislative developments in detail, exploring their impact, effectiveness, and the challenges they seek to address. We will also consider the emergence of newer and increasingly complex threats, including a range of single issue extremisms and other forms of harmful activity that may fall outside the scope of existing counterterrorism legislation. Understanding these emerging risks is essential to evaluating whether current laws remain fit for purpose. If you are interested in criminal law and human rights, then this is the event for you.

It's an immersive experience into one of BlackRock's business areas, including work shadowing, a group project, networking and social events, with the option to apply to experience up to two functions (e.g. Investment Research and Analytics & Modeling) within the same application. Candidates can apply for only one programme (Spring Insight or Placement). After submitting an application, candidates receive a pre-interview assessment to complete within five days.
