Full job description
The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join the firm as systems engineering interns. Engineers at the firm are responsible for designing, developing, and managing the firm's global technology infrastructure. The role offers the opportunity to be part of a collaborative and collegial work environment. This roughly 12-week program will take place in London and is expected to run from June to August 2027. What you'll do day-to-day: collaborate on a mix of software development and infrastructure work, such as building a wide range of technical solutions in areas including Linux and Windows management, database infrastructure, application engineering, DevOps, and information security; work may include developing full-stack web applications, building solutions to help find software vulnerabilities, administering various infrastructure-level systems, and developing efficiency improvements for all platforms; specific projects will be matched to your interests and experience, such as building automation for operating system upgrades, optimizing large-scale infrastructure operations, enhancing security information and event management systems, and collaborating with teams across the Systems team to enhance and deploy a full-stack web app for firmwide use. Who we're looking for: enrollment in a degree program in computer science, computer engineering, or another technical discipline, with similar interests or work experience and an impressive record of achievement; a solid foundation in computer science demonstrated through past internships, personal projects, or contributions to open-source platforms; keen problem-solving abilities and intellectual curiosity, as well as collaboration, communication, organizational, and time management skills; proficiency in algorithms, software development, and systems infrastructure, as well as the ability to effectively use AI-assisted development tools when coding in Python, JavaScript, Go, or similar languages; practical experience working with technical infrastructure in one of our focus areas (Windows, Linux/UNIX, Cloud, Networking, or information security) is a plus but not required; current enrollment in a four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any field of study is also welcome, with no previous finance experience necessary. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study. The applicable annual base salary or hourly rate paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors, including the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background. The D. E. Shaw group is an equal opportunity employer.
